The city of Miami is named after the Miami River, which derived its name from Lake Mayaimi, now called Lake Okeechobee. The Miami River is a river in the State of Florida that drains out of the Everglades and runs through the city of Miami, clearly dividing the areas of Downtown and Brickell and connecting with the Biscayne Bay and the Miami Port. It was originally a natural river, inhabited at its mouth by the Tequesta Indians. Because of this reason, back in the early 2000s, many elements of this tribe were found in the area of Brickell point, where now sits a national archaeological site, called the Miami Circle.
